When you decide to start a business, your ultimate goal is to bring awareness to your services or products, make money and be successful doing it.
BUILD YOUR BRAND.
The question is…what can you do to achieve those goals and get your business off the ground? First, you need to build a brand for your business. Having a brand is going to be what separates you from your competitors, otherwise, you will get lost in the crowd.
A brand starts with having a corporate identity. A corporate identity includes your business logo, business cards, letterheads, envelopes, etc… You would first start with a logo. Not just any logo, such as a hat and your business name or a car symbol. A logo that without question represents who you are and what you do and most importantly, separates you from your competitors. Most times, your logo is the first thing prospects notice about you. You want a logo that will stand out and is recognizable. Take the Nike symbol, as simple as this logo is, it makes a statement and it is recognized all over the world.
There are many online companies and local businesses that can provide these services for you. Make sure that when you are requesting services, that you are getting a customized logo. You don’t want a logo that uses the same symbol as someone else, but with your name added to it.
Once you have a logo design, then get your business cards, letterheads, marketing collaterals, etc… created. You want your business to keep a uniformed look. Using the same colors, symbols, fonts, etc… on everything that represents your business, makes it easier to be recognized and remembered.
MAINTAIN YOUR BRAND.
Once you’ve created your brand, you must maintain it. Like many celebrities that are well known on the account of someone else, has now got their own name. Take Kim Kardashian for instance, some may know where her brand began, but she would just be another pretty face if she didn’t maintain it.
Social media is a place where it allows businesses to build and maintain their brand. If you’re not on social media, then you need to join. You must keep your customers engaged with your services or products. Don’t just promote your products or services, give tips and blog about your expertise.
Add your social media address on your email signatures, your business cards, invoices, sales receipts, etc…
Just because you have a social media page, doesn’t mean you don’t need a website. You absolutely must have a website. All the information that you place on social media sites belongs to those sites. Get a website that will have your customized domain name.
Having a website is also a way of maintaining your brand. A website collects the in-depth ins and outs of your business...your goals, the people you’ve worked with, a portfolio, news, events, etc… plus this is a tool that is working and maintaining your brand 24 hours a day/7 days a week. Having a website increases customer/client confidence in your business, most prospects search businesses online before they choose to buy their products, use their services or donate to their charity.
You don’t have to pay the high costs of coded websites when you have so many CMS (Content Management System) services online. CMS sites are cost effective and easy to maintain.
EXPOSE YOUR BRAND.
Websites can expose your brand, however, how would they know your website even exists?
Most businesses think that they can’t afford to advertise their business, when in reality, you can’t afford not to. The online world is growing faster than ever and advertising your business has now become affordable. Advertising in places such as Google Ads, Facebook, etc…, you can control how much you want to spend. Advertising in online publications has become easier and within reach because now, you’re not paying for the costs of printing, postage, distribution, etc…, you are only paying to advertise, which is initially what you want to do.
Advertising online expands your audience reach, it’s a very effective and cost effective way to expose your brand. If your budget allows for television, radio, and billboard advertising, then do that as well, you can never advertise too much.
You can research more information on the web about building, maintaining and exposing your brand. A lot of these information can show you how to do-it-yourself, however, if you get overwhelmed with the process, there are services out there that can help you in these areas. Find the best service that fits your business and your budget.

So you’re finished with college and you’re ready to start your career, however, you are determined to start your own business without stepping into the typical nine to five.
First, congratulations on your achievement, second, congratulations on all that money you have set aside for this new venture, and third..., well actually there isn’t a third, but if the second congratulations made you stop and think, then you might want to continue to read on.
According to the Small Business Administration, in 2009 an estimated total of 552,600 businesses opened and an estimated total of 660,900 closed and some where in there 60,837 went into bankruptcy. What does that mean for you? It means that you must have proper funding to begin a business, depending upon the type of business you’re looking to go into, overhead costs alone can open and close your business in one year.
There are different options to choose from when deciding on funding your business. There are multiple loans and investors out there that may be interested in your idea or you can take the route that I took. I worked the nine to five and saved and built my business from the ground up. The good part about it is that I have no debt, everything I take in belongs to me.
My method is definitely not for every type of business, however, it’s an option that could work for you. Whether you choose to build your business from the ground up using your own funds or others, you’re going to need a plan...a business plan. No one would give you a dime without knowing what you plan to do with it. Even using your own funds and not setting a plan and goals, you won’t get very far.
Before we go into the business plan, the BIG question is, what type of business are you interested in starting? Now if this question has you at a stand still, then maybe you should save this issue in your favorites and come back when you can answer that question. If you have the answer to the question, let’s keep moving.
Back to the business plan, no two plans are the same, but all plans need to have at least the following:
*An Executive Summary
*Description of your business
*Marketing/Management Strategies
*Financial Projections
*All supporting documents
There are multiple sites that house business plans samples/templates. Some of these sites offer free templates/samples and some sites have purchase options. Here are three sites that offer free templates:
*SCORE. SCORE is a nonprofit association dedicated to educating entrepreneurs and helping small businesses start, grow, and succeed nationwide. www.score.org
*U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). SBA is an organization dedicated to providing support to small businesses and small-business owners across the nation. www.sba.gov
*Entrepreneur. Entrepreneur is a site that provides multiple information from business start-ups to business expansions. www.entrepreneur.com
Once you’ve got your business plan in place, you’re ready to seek proper funding for your business (grants, loans, investors, etc...) or you can begin to set aside funds to invest in yourself.
Let’s get your business off the ground.
